Children Chronicles…Picture this!!!
Being 13 is tough, but 13 and not really knowing where you belong is tougher. He did the one thing I was hoping he didn’t do. I’m not trained for that, I don’t want that, that is hard to control once it gets out of hand…so I called the cops.
I told him I was calling the cops, but he didn’t seem scared, he didn’t react, he wasn’t tripping. He actually asked me what the cops are going to do. Ding dong… they are here!!
He must be scared, he’s only 13, I’m scared, well not really, I know they won’t hurt him. That wasn’t the intention, and somehow he knew that. He knew because I wasn’t frantic or in a rage. He knows I want the best for him, and the cops understood the assignment.
They went to his room and had a talk. The talk was more like educating him on the consequences of his actions, the talk was about the statistics of black men behind bars for small stuff, the talk was about how one mistake could ruin his life. When they were done, they came downstairs and educated us. They turned to the men in the house and told them to step up. It was a good decision to call the cops on my 13 year old.
After they were gone he came downstairs, and we talked a little. Then he said something that made me fall in love all over again.….
“Is there a way to get in touch with officer Williams?”
“Why?”
“I wanted to thank him for coming out and talking to me.”
Damn you Laron. I’m supposed to be mad!!! I hate that he can just say something that snaps me right out of my madness. I’m not playing with him. It breaks my heart that he’s going through whatever he’s going through, I have no idea what goes on in his head, but I know it’s too much for a 13 year old to carry. He didn’t ask for this!!
By the way, I didn’t call 911, I called the non emergency line. They didn’t pull up with lights flashing, they didn’t even park their car near the house. They are trained differently, and they knew it was a black mom’s cry for help. I’m calling them again, but this time he requested it… I think I like it….but when does he turn 21?
